Apple Unveils Interactive Web Tribute for iPod 25th Anniversary

A hidden playable replica of the classic music player appears on Apple Music's error page to mark a quarter century since its launch.

Apple introduced its first iPod on October 23, 2001, a device that changed how people carried their music libraries. Today, the company has marked the 25th anniversary of that debut with a subtle digital tribute on its website.

The feature, which was identified by a user known as Kian on the social platform X, exists as an easter egg within the Apple Music web domain. When a visitor attempts to access a non-existent page on music.apple.com, such as by typing music.apple.com/ipod, the standard error message is replaced by a working replica of the original hardware.

The timeline of this device is short but significant. The hardware was discontinued years ago, meaning no new physical units are available to purchase. For two decades, the product has existed primarily in the memories of its users. This web-based version serves as a direct link to that history without requiring any new hardware purchases.

The virtual player is fully interactive, mirroring the physical controls of the 2001 model. Users can click the on-screen buttons to navigate through a set of pre-installed tracks. The iconic scroll wheel is also functional, allowing visitors to click and drag to scroll through the list, just as they would turn the wheel on the actual device.

The library consists of songs by artists who were popular at the time of the original launch. Selecting a track plays a 90-second preview directly in the browser window. This design choice ensures that users do not need to install a separate application or sign in to a specific app to experience the tribute. The interface is self-contained within the web page.

This addition appears to be a lighthearted nod to the past rather than a signal of a new product launch. There is no current indication that Apple plans to release a dedicated hardware music player in the near future. The web version offers a simple way for fans to revisit the look and feel of the device that defined a generation of portable audio.

For those who prefer modern streaming over physical devices, Apple Music remains available for $11.99 per month. It is also included in the broader Apple One bundle. The anniversary easter egg highlights the enduring legacy of the iPod, even as the company moves forward with its current software and hardware ecosystem.
