Dale Brown, the architect of modern Louisiana State University men's basketball, died on Friday, Oct. 23. He was 90 years old.
Brown coached the Tigers for 25 seasons, spanning from 1972 to 1997. His 448 career victories remain the most by any head coach in school history. During his tenure, LSU captured four Southeastern Conference regular-season titles and appeared in the NCAA Tournament 13 times. The program advanced to the Final Four in 1981 and 1986 under his leadership.
The news of his death arrived with sharp timing. LSU announced on Wednesday that Brown had been selected for the 2027 John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award. The award recognizes long-term impact on the sport. Brown passed away 48 hours after that announcement.
He built the program from the ground up upon arriving in Baton Rouge in 1972. He traveled across the state to recruit fans and players. His efforts yielded the first SEC regular-season championship since 1954 in 1979. The team then reached the elite level of the tournament in 1981, earning Brown the Associated Press National Coach of the Year title. He was also named SEC Coach of the Year four times.
His roster included future NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, and Rudy Macklin. Brown was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, and the LSU Athletic Hall of Fame. In 2023, the university renamed the main court in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center to Dale Brown/Sue Gunter Court in his honor.
In a 2025 interview, Brown recalled a game against top-ranked Kentucky where all five starters fouled out. He told his bench players, "From now on you are not substitutes, you are backups." LSU won the game. He credited his mother for teaching him to do what is right and warned that polishing one's image can tarnish character.
Brown was born in Minot, North Dakota, on Oct. 31, 1935. He died eight days before his 91st birthday. His family stated that he always led with his heart and was a humanitarian before anything else. Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry noted on social media that Brown put LSU basketball on the map.
