Northern France experienced a wave of violence on Friday as a gunman opened fire in the Paris suburbs of Trappes and La Verriere. The incident resulted in one death and five injuries, with authorities quickly labeling the event a racially motivated terrorist act.

The shooting began at approximately 10:30 a.m. local time. The attacker, identified as 39-year-old Kevin T., drove through the two working-class communities while firing an automatic weapon. He targeted specific locations including a petrol station, a medical centre, and a children's playground. The sequence of events concluded after about 15 minutes when police apprehended the suspect.

Pengo Bassio Wangi was named as the person killed in the attack. French media reported that Wangi was a young Black man. Five other individuals were wounded. Among the injured is a 12-year-old girl of North African descent who was shot eight times. Her mother stated that the child was transported to a children's hospital for surgery. Prosecutors indicated that three of the five wounded people remain in critical condition.

Local MP Laurent Mazaury provided details on the suspect's statements upon arrest. Mazaury said the gunman told officers he intended to kill foreigners. Mazaury described the suspect as a racist. Reports from French media noted that one of the wounded women was wearing a headscarf. The injured girl was also described as wearing a headscarf.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez characterized the incident as clearly a terrorist crime. He stated that investigations were ongoing. Prosecutors are currently examining whether the suspect conspired with a terrorist group. A member of the suspect's immediate family has also been taken into custody as part of the inquiry.

Investigators recovered an older-style semiautomatic weapon from the World War II era inside the suspect's vehicle. Tear gas grenades were also found in the car. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu described the case as very serious. He confirmed that all security and judicial resources had been mobilized to handle the situation.

President Emmanuel Macron termed the incident a racist terrorist attack. He called it a turning point for the French Republic and the nation. Macron stated that France remains determined to combat racism in all its forms. Trappes mayor Ali Rabeh, who has Moroccan roots, said the gunman fired at random to cause a bloodbath. Rabeh stated that the attack was objectively racist and probably Islamophobic. He remarked that the victims could easily have been his own relatives.

The mother of the injured girl spoke to broadcaster RTL about the incident. She asked how anyone could do such a thing to a child. She questioned whether her daughter was targeted because of her headscarf. She emphasized that the girl was born in Trappes and has the right to build her life in France.

The attack occurred during a period of cost-of-living and student protests in France. Authorities plan to deploy 70,000 police officers on Saturday for expected demonstrations. Far-right National Rally leader Marine Le Pen condemned the shooting as barbaric. Muslim groups accused the populist right of fostering hatred through Islamophobic rhetoric. Rabeh called politicians who make negative comments about Muslims criminals. The French Muslim Council stated that promoters of anti-Muslim hate speech have blood on their hands.
