The Charlotte City Council voted on Monday to extend its moratorium on new data centers by 11 months. The decision pushes the deadline for new construction permits to October 18, 2027. This regulatory pause follows a local trivia night where residents discussed the energy and water demands of these facilities.

Faith Silva, coordinator for the nonprofit Charlotte-Mecklenburg Climate Leaders, said data centers are currently a dominant topic in local news and community conversation. Her group organized the event to help neighbors understand the environmental footprint of hyperscale computing sites. The trivia night took place on Tuesday evening at Patagonia Charlotte in the South End neighborhood.

Approximately 20 people attended the gathering. Participants answered questions about utility rates, water usage, and local politics. Some attendees played in pairs, while others competed individually. Nundy Silva, for example, entered as a solo competitor under the team name Hey Nunnie Nunnie. He cited a Renaissance fair act as the inspiration for his chosen moniker.

Silva noted that he learned specific details about the duration of the pause during the game. He said the length of the moratorium made him feel more hopeful about the city's approach. The event concluded with winners receiving new outdoor wear, while all other participants left with updated knowledge on the subject.

The council’s vote provides a nearly one-year window for residents and officials to gather information before the current restrictions lift. The next major date for data center regulation in Charlotte is now set for late 2027.
