Joachim Herrmann, the interior minister of Bavaria, announced that the Kehlsteinhaus will be rebuilt after a fire destroyed the structure on Friday night. The building, located on the peak of the Obersalzberg, is a historic site that has served as a tourist destination and restaurant since the 1930s. Herrmann made the announcement in Berchtesgaden, stating that the site would not be left as a ruin.

Emergency services received alerts at approximately 9:15 p.m. local time regarding the blaze. When firefighters arrived at the 6,017-foot elevation, they found the structure fully engulfed in flames. Authorities reported that no one was inside the building at the time, and no injuries were recorded. Police noted that local terrain conditions made it difficult to transport fire trucks to the remote site.

Investigators moved quickly to identify a suspect following the outbreak. A 33-year-old German citizen with connections to the Berchtesgaden region was taken into custody. Although he does not currently reside in the area, prosecutors confirmed he has been questioned. Officials stated that the suspect displayed signs of mental illness and was scheduled to be transferred to a psychiatric facility.

Prosecutors indicated that they are examining whether a political motive influenced the fire, given the building's history as a temporary seat of government for Adolf Hitler. The Kehlsteinhaus was completed in 1938 and escaped Allied bombing during World War II. It remains one of the few undamaged structures from the era, with its own website noting that it stands for the insanity of the regime. Police said there is no current evidence that others were involved in the incident.

The cause of the fire remains under criminal investigation. Herrmann said that the future appearance of the site will be determined through discussions with local officials, historians, and preservationists. He expressed confidence that a sensible solution would be found for the reconstruction.

The minister emphasized the importance of continuing the work of remembrance at the site. The Kehlsteinhaus has operated as a beer garden and dining venue in recent years, drawing visitors to the Bavarian Alps. The decision to rebuild follows the confirmation that the original structure was lost to the flames.
