Pinellas County residents will have a new option for affordable pet care starting Monday, Nov. 2, as the Humane Society of Tampa Bay opens a clinic at 2907 State Road 590, Suite 5 in Clearwater. The facility is designed to serve dog and cat owners who find private veterinary costs prohibitive, removing financial hurdles that often force families to surrender their animals to shelters.
Nash McCutchen, the organization's director of marketing and design, stated that the clinic aims to keep pets out of the shelter by addressing economic difficulties. She noted that high vet bills frequently lead owners to make difficult decisions about their animals' care. The new site offers a safety net for those struggling to afford basic medical needs in the current economy.
The expansion follows a merger between the Humane Society of Tampa Bay and the Humane Society of Pinellas completed in January. McCutchen said the consolidation allows the organization to serve Pinellas County more efficiently. Pet owners no longer need to drive over the bridge to access certain resources, and the combined entity can take in more animals while providing pet food assistance and affordable care to a wider community.
The one-story building is located near the nonprofit's existing Clearwater animal shelter. It contains multiple exam rooms and operates as a low-cost, full-service animal hospital similar to the one already running in Tampa. McCutchen clarified that while the facility is not a hospital, it provides a comprehensive list of medical services. These include vaccinations, wellness exams, flea and heartworm prevention, microchipping, diagnostic lab work, X-rays, nail trims, and treatment for basic illnesses.
The clinic is open to anyone regardless of income or residency. McCutchen emphasized that residents do not need to qualify for services to use the facility. Although the location is in Pinellas County, individuals from any county can book appointments. The organization plans to add spay and neuter services in the future, expanding the range of procedures available to the public.
Appointments are required for all visits. A grand opening celebration is scheduled for Nov. 12. The facility represents a physical expansion of services previously available only through the Tampa location or the former Pinellas operations.
