A 36-year-old woman from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire has died in the Bahamas after a strong current carried her into the water while she attempted to rescue her two sons. The Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed the death on Tuesday and opened an investigation into the incident on the island of Bimini.
The family was snorkeling near the southern point of the island with the woman's husband when the current swept the boys away. The mother swam toward her children and was also pulled under. Both boys were eventually rescued from the water. Officers at the Alice Town police station received a report shortly after 10 a.m. that a woman was unresponsive at the North Bimini Ferry Dock.
Police dispatched to the scene learned that the woman had already been transported to a local clinic for medical attention. A doctor pronounced her dead despite efforts to revive her. Authorities noted that CPR was administered at the ferry dock after she was pulled from the water. The force stated that foul play is not suspected at this time, though an autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.
A spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office offered condolences to the family. Officials are currently in contact with local authorities to provide support. The investigation remains open as the autopsy proceeds.
