Trump Orders AI Data Centers to Return Power to Locals

The administration is directing tech giants to build their own energy supplies and provide excess electricity to nearby communities.

President Donald Trump has issued an instruction to developers of data centers and AI hyperscalers, directing them to provide a financial dividend to the communities they serve. The stated goal is to address rising energy costs or reduce them, a move intended to make the establishment of these facilities more acceptable to local populations. In a post on his Truth Social platform, he indicated that the administration will mandate that these companies generate their own electricity and subsequently provide or sell any surplus energy back to the community.

Across the United States, residents have pushed back against the construction of AI data centers, often citing the significant burden they place on the area. These facilities are associated with increased electricity prices, noise, water shortages, air pollution, and deforestation, all of which are issues that small communities must confront due to their presence.

To ease these burdens, Trump is asking large companies to provide the communities they affect with something that could make their presence more acceptable. The administration is focused on staying ahead of China in the AI race and is seeking ways to win back some public support by having data centers contribute to the affected communities. The practical details of how this will be implemented are not yet clear. Given the focus of the post on electricity, the dividend could be provided in a form that partially covers rising electricity costs, a direct pain point for many homes in the vicinity of these facilities.

The administration had previously ordered these companies to generate their own electricity. The excess power from their own generation could be used to further lower electricity costs for local residents. This directive is connected to a recently passed act that requires data centers to pay for grid upgrades to prevent these costs from being passed to local taxpayers.

“Data Centers that were highly unpopular in a certain area have become extremely popular when a financial deal is struck,” Trump wrote. He further stated, “MAKE DEALS, and get them built!!!”

Whether these financial arrangements will be sufficient to win over communities is an open question, as the economic aspect is only one part of the problem. Significant challenges remain, such as enormous water consumption, ecological damage, and pollution, which continue to make AI data centers a difficult prospect to accept wherever they are located.

The timeline of this issue began with the administration's order for data centers to become self-sufficient in terms of power generation. This was followed by the passage of an act requiring them to pay for grid upgrades. Now, the latest development involves a call for these companies to provide a financial dividend to the communities they impact.

The next step will likely involve defining how these financial deals will be structured. The administration's ability to follow through on this mandate and the willingness of AI companies to comply will determine if this plan can address the concerns of local communities. Whether any of these actions will reduce or increase costs for residents remains to be seen.
