Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany is sidelined for weeks after collapsing on the training pitch, leaving the club to rely on its assistant staff for a critical league fixture. The 40-year-old manager remains hospitalized in a stable condition, with doctors still determining the specific nature of his viral infection.

Sporting director Max Eberl confirmed the timeline at a Saturday press conference, stating that the absence will be measured in weeks rather than days. Eberl emphasized that the medical team requires time to fully understand the illness before setting a recovery schedule. He noted that the club prioritizes Kompany's health over immediate tactical planning, ensuring the manager receives all the time necessary to recover.

English assistant coach Aaron Danks will guide the team for Sunday’s Bundesliga match against Freiburg. Danks led the press briefing in Kompany’s place and detailed his brief conversation with the head coach on Friday. He explained that they avoided football discussions to focus solely on Kompany’s well-being. Danks asserted that the coaching staff would collaborate to maintain the club’s trajectory during this period.

Bayern holds a one-point lead over Freiburg at the top of the Bundesliga table entering the match. Eberl stated that the club did not seek a postponement for the trip to Freiburg. He argued that a strong performance on the pitch would serve as the best possible support for Kompany’s recovery. The team’s next major competition is a Champions League match against Atletico Madrid in Spain on November 3.

The squad will also be without Germany captain Joshua Kimmich for the Freiburg game. Danks confirmed that Kimmich remains on bereavement leave, which began on Tuesday. Kompany had returned to the dugout for Wednesday’s home victory against Arsenal despite missing the pre-match press conference due to his illness. He admitted to ignoring early warning signs, describing his body’s eventual response as a definitive signal to stop.

The collapse occurred on Friday, prompting the postponement of Bayern’s second team match. Kompany, a former captain for Manchester City and Belgium, has not been given a specific return date. Eberl indicated that the medical examinations are ongoing, and the club will communicate updates as the situation becomes clearer. The focus now shifts to the coaching staff managing the immediate competitive schedule without the head coach’s physical presence.
