Ryleigh Schoonover will make her collegiate debut at the Save Mart Center in less than two weeks when Fresno State hosts UC Merced. The freshman forward joins the Bulldogs for their first season, capping a recruiting cycle that brought a local standout to the Pac-12 program.

Schoonover comes from a basketball environment defined by sustained dominance. For the past 14 consecutive years, her former high school team, the Clovis West Golden Eagles, has captured the Central Section championship. That long run of titles established a baseline of success that follows her into the college ranks.

Fresno State head coach Ryan McCarthy identified Schoonover as the premier talent in her local class. He stated that she was the best player in the area for the 2026 graduating class and that her arrival confirmed that assessment. McCarthy noted that her background in a program dedicated to winning prepares her for the high expectations of the college floor.

Schoonover chose to stay in the Central Valley rather than relocate for college. She cited the personal significance of representing her local community, noting that wearing the valley identity on her jersey holds a unique meaning for players from the region. She credits her high school coach, Craig Campbell, for instilling a work ethic that aligns with the standards required at Fresno State.

Campbell, who has coached the program through its 14-year championship run, maintains that the team aims to compete at a high level annually. He described the program's goal as consistently challenging for the title, even if they do not claim it every season. He believes Schoonover has only begun to demonstrate her full potential for McCarthy's staff.

The Fresno State season opener against UC Merced will mark Schoonover's first game in front of a college crowd. She enters the season as part of a freshman class that McCarthy expects to contribute immediately. The Bulldogs are preparing for a campaign that includes a push for a Pac-12 conference championship, with Schoonover positioned as a key piece of that roster.
