The San Francisco 49ers executed a trade with the Indianapolis Colts on Tuesday, sending a 2027 fourth-round pick in exchange for defensive tackle DeForest Buckner. The move reunites Buckner with the franchise that drafted him with the seventh overall pick in 2016. General Manager John Lynch and his staff finalized the deal as the team prepares for the November 10 trade deadline.
Buckner had been a target for the Niners for several years. Lynch described the original trade of Buckner to Indianapolis in March 2020 as the toughest decision of his tenure. Since then, San Francisco attempted to replace his production with draft selections like Javon Kinlaw and free agent signings including Javon Hargrave and Maliek Collins. The team has struggled to generate consistent pass pressure this season, ranking 31st in the NFL with a 23% pressure rate when rushing four players.
The acquisition addresses an immediate need on the defensive line. Buckner has missed only 14 games in his 10-year career. His return provides depth alongside edge rushers Nick Bosa and C.J. West, both of whom are currently dealing with injuries. Bosa is recovering from a calf issue, while West is undergoing knee surgery. The team is cautious about their return timelines, with Shanahan noting that Bosa might not be available for every game after his return.
Coach Kyle Shanahan stated that the front office is using the bye week to evaluate additional targets. The two primary areas of focus are the receiver corps and the defensive line. San Francisco suffered its first loss of the season in Atlanta, where their pass rush recorded zero sacks and their receiving group lacked impact beyond second-year wideout Jordan Watkins. Shanahan confirmed that the staff is actively working on those positions.
Veterans on the roster are encouraging the front office to make aggressive moves. Tight end George Kittle, fullback Kyle Juszczyk, and offensive tackle Trent Williams have publicly teased Lynch about potential trades. Williams, who is 38, said the players prefer proven talent over draft gambles. He noted that while the coaching staff views the situation holistically, the players want to secure established performers to maximize their window for a championship.
The Niners have several injured players who could return before the Week 9 matchup against the Raiders. Those players include wideout Deebo Samuel Sr., who is dealing with a hamstring injury, and wideouts Mike Evans and Demarcus Robinson. Evans is managing Achilles tendinitis, while Robinson is recovering from an ankle issue. Rookie wideout De'Zhaun Stribling is expected to return from ankle surgery in December. Shanahan said the team is operating under the assumption that some of these players may not be ready immediately.
If the Niners pursue additional trades, the market offers several options. Edge rushers Khalil Mack, Will McDonald IV, Josh Sweat, and Yaya Diaby are potential targets to bolster the pass rush. On the offensive side, wideouts Brian Thomas Jr., Jerry Jeudy, and Josh Downs are available. Downs requested a trade from the Colts on Wednesday. Shanahan said the team might make a move that provides help for one or two weeks while injured players recover, allowing for roster cuts later in the season.
Lynch has previously secured major talent through trades, bringing in Trent Williams in 2020 and running back Christian McCaffrey in 2022. Any future acquisition would need to fit the long-term foundation of the team. While superstar names like Maxx Crosby and Garrett Wilson are on the board, Shanahan indicated that the Niners are realistic about the cost. The team will look for moves that improve the roster without sacrificing too much future capital.
