Apple’s iPhone Duo is now on sale, but full functionality depends on purchasing additional hardware. The device, the first foldable phone from the company, launches with a dependency on third-party and first-party add-ons. Tech site 9to5Mac has calculated that early buyers need approximately $249 in accessories to use the phone’s key new features.

The most notable addition is Apple Pencil support, a capability never before available on an iPhone. Users can write notes and sketch on both the outer and inner displays. Apple designed the interface based on the proportions of a standard A-series paper notebook. However, the feature is not active at launch. It arrives next week via the iOS 27.2 update. Only the Apple Pencil with USB-C is compatible. The stylus is currently listed at $69, a reduction from its previous $79 price point.

Charging speed also requires specific equipment. The iPhone Duo can reach 50 percent charge in roughly 20 minutes. This speed is only achievable with a suitable power adapter. The phone ships with a USB-C cable but no charger, a standard practice for recent models. Many owners may already possess a 20W adapter. For faster performance, 9to5Mac recommends Apple’s 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max, priced at $34. An alternative is Anker’s 100W USB-C charger, which includes a five-foot cable, available for $29.

Drivers will find utility in the ESR MagSafe Car Mount. The device clips to an air vent and holds the phone magnetically. It costs $19, down from $29. When paired with CarPlay, the map displays on the vehicle's screen while the phone shows step-by-step directions. The larger display of the Duo should enhance this setup.

Case options vary in price and manufacturer. Third-party choices include the SPIDERCASE Magnetic Case, which features a built-in stand and screen protector, for $29. The Spigen Ultra Hybrid Pro, a clear MagSafe-compatible case, sells for $39. Apple offers two proprietary options. The iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand is $129. The standard iPhone Duo Case is $79.

StandBy mode receives upgrades on the Duo. The phone can display various views while upright, even when not charging. Two specific modes, Home Camera and Home Modular, provide access to smart home accessories. Home Camera allows users to monitor security devices at a glance. 9to5Mac suggests two compatible models: the Aqara G100 2K camera at $39 and a eufy 4K camera at $69.

AirPods Pro 3 are recommended for users without current earbuds. The writer notes the noise cancellation aids focus during work. The pair is currently on sale at Amazon for $199, reduced from $249.
