Musk Pours $76 Million Into Midterms, Focusing on Texas

A large financial infusion into his political action committee is intended to influence a closely contested Senate race in Texas.

As midterm elections approach, Elon Musk has significantly increased his financial contributions to Republican political efforts to influence the outcome of closely contested races. According to a pre-election report filed with the Federal Election Commission on October 22, Musk contributed over $76 million to America PAC, his personal political action committee, during the first two weeks of October. This latest injection of capital is part of a broader effort to support GOP candidates as Election Day nears.

America PAC reported spending nearly $43 million during the same early October period, leaving the group with approximately $47 million in cash on hand for the campaign's final weeks. The primary focus of this recent spending was the highly competitive U.S. Senate race in Texas. The PAC allocated $15.2 million to that contest alone, a figure that is double what it spent on the race throughout the entire summer.

The spending in Texas was split between attacking the Democratic candidate, James Talarico, with $12.4 million, and promoting the Republican candidate, Ken Paxton, with $2.8 million. Subsequent daily filings show an additional $9.1 million was spent against Talarico, bringing the total spent by America PAC on opposing him this cycle to nearly $28 million. This amount represents approximately 40 percent of the PAC's total spending to support or oppose any candidate. The committee also increased its focus on digital advertising, spending $11.4 million in this area over the two-week period, a sum close to its combined spending on mail and text messaging.

Musk's political spending is not limited to this recent contribution. An analysis of FEC filings shows that he has given more than $445 million to Republican political groups during this election cycle, making him the largest known individual donor in the midterms. More than $165 million of this total has been directed to America PAC since July. America PAC declined to comment for this report.

Musk's involvement in the Texas Senate race extends beyond financial contributions. The Texas-based entrepreneur has also used his social media platform, X, to comment on the contest. On October 21, he posted that “there is something deeply wrong with Talarico,” later calling him “a creep” and asserting, without evidence, that “he would vote to take away your kids and transition them.” Earlier in October, Musk shared an unverified claim that Talarico had been treated at a mental health facility. Talarico responded the same day, stating, “There is something deeply wrong with a political system that allows one trillionaire to buy his own personal US Senator.”

The Texas race remains a statistical toss-up. A poll conducted by Emerson College from October 17 to 19 among 1,000 likely voters in the state found Talarico at 48 percent and Paxton at 46 percent, a margin that falls within the survey's 3-point margin of error.

The outcome of the election has significant consequences for Musk's business interests. If Democrats secure a majority in the House, committee chairs have indicated plans to investigate Musk's involvement in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and his companies' federal contracts. A California Democrat, Zoe Lofgren, has referred to the “astounding” number of conflicts of interest as a concern. Unified Democratic control of Congress would present further challenges for him.

Adding to these concerns, Silicon Valley Democrats have raised a new issue. On October 23, Representatives Sam Liccardo, Jimmy Panetta, and Ro Khanna sent a letter to the White House requesting an investigation into restrictions placed on SpaceX's Starshield satellite service in Ukraine. The letter also stated that the next Congress “will closely scrutinize federal funding awarded to Mr. Musk's businesses.”
