OpenAI Moves to Raise $30 Billion Ahead of Public Listing
The artificial intelligence lab is pursuing a massive private funding round that would value it above one trillion dollars.

If you have been watching the artificial intelligence market closely, you know the players are moving fast. For the average observer, the immediate implication is that the companies building these tools remain in a race for dominance, funded by massive amounts of capital. OpenAI is now reportedly working to raise a significant sum to fuel its next phase of growth, a move that comes just ahead of its anticipated public debut.
According to sources familiar with the matter who spoke to CNBC, the organization is putting together a funding round that could reach $30 billion. If successful, this transaction would value the company at $1.25 trillion before the new money is added. This push is being led by Coatue and investors from the UAE. Should this valuation hold, it would set a record as the most highly valued private company in history.
This effort marks a strategic shift away from rushing toward a public listing immediately. The artificial intelligence lab filed confidential paperwork for an IPO in June, but it is currently prioritizing a private raise. This specific plan follows a report from a month prior, which indicated a similar fundraising target but at a $1.4 trillion valuation. Because negotiations are still ongoing, the final numbers could shift before the deal is signed.
There are also additional elements to the funding from the Gulf region. Reports indicate that money from the UAE could be linked to an agreement regarding computing capacity. OpenAI has declined to comment on these specific details or the fundraising efforts.
This potential valuation would significantly raise the stakes for any future public offering. The company previously completed a funding round in March that valued the ChatGPT creator at $852 billion post-money. A jump to over one trillion dollars would represent a massive increase in perceived worth over a short period, setting a very high bar for what investors might expect when shares eventually trade on a public exchange.
The scale of this proposed round also creates pressure on competitors, particularly Anthropic. Anthropic filed its own confidential paperwork for an IPO in June, and many believe it is close to materializing. Reports suggest Anthropic is seeking a valuation between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion for its public debut, a target that would exceed OpenAI's private valuation.
Anthropic raised $65 billion in May at a valuation of $965 billion, a round many believed would be its final major private raise before going public. As of October 2026, neither company has completed its public offering, but both are securing the capital necessary to compete. The outcome of these private negotiations will determine the baseline for the next major technology listing.
Terms for the OpenAI round remain in negotiation, so the exact figures are not final. Investors are weighing the risks against the potential for rapid growth in a sector that is still defining its future. The market will be watching closely to see how much capital flows into these private entities before they open their books to the public.
