Barcelona will host Real Madrid at Camp Nou on Sunday, a matchup that will determine which side claims the lead in one of football's longest running statistical ties. Both clubs currently hold 106 wins in the rivalry, a figure that has remained unchanged for 124 years. A three-point victory for either team on Sunday will end that equilibrium and grant the winner the sole top spot in the all-time record book.

The rivalry originated in 1902 and has since featured many of the sport's most prominent figures. Past editions saw Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo face off, alongside legends such as David Beckham and Zinedine Zidane. Current attention centers on Lamine Yamal and Raphinha for Barcelona, and Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, and Vinicius Jr for Real Madrid.

Historical results in this fixture have often shifted the trajectory of league titles. In April 2017, Barcelona won 3-2 at the Santiago Bernabeu. Messi scored his 500th career goal for the club in the final minute to seal that victory, though Real Madrid still finished the La Liga season ahead by three points.

A 3-3 draw at Camp Nou in March 2007 stands out for Messi's first career hat-trick. The Argentine forward rescued a point for Barcelona after they were reduced to ten men. Ruud van Nistelrooy scored twice for Real Madrid, and Sergio Ramos added a third, but Messi equalized in stoppage time. Both clubs finished that season with 76 points, with Real Madrid claiming the title on head-to-head record.

Real Madrid's 4-2 home win in April 2005 highlighted the era of the Galacticos squad. Zidane, Ronaldo Nazario, and Raul scored for the hosts, while Michael Owen added a fourth in the 65th minute. Samuel Eto'o and Ronaldinho scored for Barcelona, which still secured the league title that year by three points.

The most lopsided result in recent memory occurred on May 2, 2009, when Barcelona won 6-2 at the Bernabeu. Thierry Henry scored twice, and Messi, Carles Puyol, and Gerard Pique also found the net. Barcelona went on to win the league that season by nine points.

The rivalry also decided domestic cup outcomes. Real Madrid defeated Barcelona 1-0 in extra time in the Copa del Rey final on April 20, 2011. Cristiano Ronaldo headed in a pass from Angel Di Maria to secure the win, marking the club's first domestic cup since 1993 and its first trophy under manager Jose Mourinho.
