Colts Pay Steepest Price in 2025 NFL Deadline Grade Recheck
A year later, the Sauce Gardner deal remains the biggest bust while mid-round rentals prove the most effective for contenders.

The Indianapolis Colts lost their general manager and two first-round picks after acquiring Sauce Gardner. This remains the costliest mistake from the 2025 NFL trade deadline. The Jets gained a young offensive core and a 2027 first-rounder. They still hold that pick as the Colts trend toward a rebuild.
The 2025 deadline featured 27 in-season trades. That number set a record for a single year in 25 years. The volume did not guarantee quality. Teams learned that All-Pro status does not protect a player from a steep decline. The Gardner move shows why franchises should avoid mortgaging future assets for a single star.
The most successful deals involved expiring contracts. Teams traded players who would have left for free agency. In exchange, they received mid or late round draft capital. These moves offered immediate help to one side and future value to the other. They avoided the risk of long-term commitments.
The Dallas Cowboys traded for Quinnen Williams. They gave up a 2026 second-rounder and a 2027 first-rounder. Williams recorded six tackles for loss in the first six games. That total was the highest for a Cowboys defensive tackle since 2013. However, the defense has not improved as a unit. The Jets released Mazi Smith and have derived little value from D'Angelo Ponds.
The Philadelphia Eagles acquired Jaelan Phillips for a 2026 third-rounder. Phillips played some of his best football in eight games. He helped the team secure a playoff spot. The Eagles did not re-sign him to a four-year, $120 million deal. Instead, his departure earns them a compensatory third-rounder in 2027. This offsets the cost of the original trade.
The Seattle Seahawks traded for Rashid Shaheed. They received a secondary receiving option and a special teams threat. Shaheed signed a three-year, $51 million extension after returning two kickoffs for touchdowns in 2025. The New Orleans Saints received two high-end Day 3 picks. This move allowed them to clear his expiring contract without losing value.
The Baltimore Ravens did not appear in the top ten regrades. The list focused on high-impact transactions. The regrades show that small moves often yield better returns than blockbuster deals. Teams that traded for depth at low cost outperformed those who paid premium prices for stars.
The 2026 deadline is approaching on Nov. 10. Teams will look to the 2025 results for guidance. They will avoid overpaying for aging stars. They will seek to acquire players on expiring deals in exchange for draft capital. The goal is to build long-term value through short-term rentals.
