Ministry of Awesome established a national Startup Hub Network, or NEST, in central Christchurch to address geographic isolation in New Zealand’s business sector. The new facility seeks to increase the density of the local startup ecosystem by providing centralized access to support services.

Graham Scown, chief executive of Ministry of Awesome, stated that the initiative aims to accelerate the progression of companies from initial concept to investment and export. He noted that successful ecosystems in Denmark and Singapore rely on geographic concentration to keep support services close to founders, a pattern he argued is missing in New Zealand.

Scown described New Zealand’s geography and limited funding for founder enterprises as problematic. He emphasized that the country is not small, despite common perceptions, and that the dispersed nature of the market creates challenges for growth.

The NEST Christchurch location at 829 Colombo St provides physical assets including workstations, meeting rooms, event spaces, and recording studios. The facility also includes full service changing rooms and garage usage for members.

Scown said the network is designed to avoid duplicating existing services. Instead, it acts as a single point of entry for founders who need specific support. He explained that the network helps coordinate funding opportunities so that different hubs do not compete for the same resources. In one example, he said partners could send support letters to other organizations if a specific funding opportunity better suited their portfolio.

The network connects existing startup hubs, programs, and communities across the country. Scown cited the success of Partly, a company that emerged from Ministry of Awesome, as evidence of the potential for such concentrated efforts. He compared the ambition to the Rocket Lab model, where one major entity can spawn multiple new companies.
