Timothy Langford, M.D., stood on the football field at Jonesboro on Oct. 24 to accept a career honor from his undergraduate alma mater, Arkansas State University. The ceremony occurred during halftime of the Red Wolves game against Georgia State.

The A-State Alumni Association presented Langford with its Distinguished Alumni award, the group’s highest distinction. He was one of three alumni recognized that afternoon. The other two recipients were Phillip Poston of Jonesboro and Billy Don Tiner of San Antonio.

Langford graduated from A-State in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree in zoology and pre-medicine. From 1980 to 1983, he played quarterback for the Red Wolves and earned All-Southland Conference honors. He later received the university’s first-ever Terry Gwin Award for top student athlete in any sport.

After A-State, Langford earned his medical degree at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in 1988. He completed his urology residency at the same institution. He practiced at Arkansas Urology for 28 years, serving as president and medical director of the state’s largest urology practice. He returned to UAMS in 2021 as a professor and chair of the Department of Urology. In November 2025, he was invested in the Steven K. Wilson Endowed Chair in Prosthetic Urology.

His wife, Terri, joined him in supporting the university’s athletic program. In 2004, the couple made a major gift that established the Tim and Terri Langford Sports Medicine Center.

Natalie Rogers, president of the Alumni Association, said the award recognizes graduates whose accomplishments bring honor to the university through professional achievement, service and leadership. She stated that Langford, Poston and Tiner have each made a lasting impact in their professions, communities and at A-State.

The association’s board of directors selected the recipients from nominations submitted by fellow alumni and supporters. In a statement, the association noted that Langford’s service extends beyond his student days. He served on the A-State Board of Trustees from 2014 to 2019 and was named trustee emeritus. He has held leadership roles with Baptist Health and the South Central Section of the American Urological Association.

Langford said the university gave him more than an education. He credited the foundation, experiences and relationships from his time there for preparing him for his current role. He described himself as deeply grateful and honored to be named a Distinguished Alumnus.

The other honorees include Poston, a 1996 graduate with a degree in marketing, who is recognized for leadership in economic development. Tiner, a 1972 graduate and retired U.S. Navy captain, is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon recognized for his military service and philanthropy.
