Viktor Orbán, the former prime minister of Hungary, is the current US pick for the next United Nations secretary-general. The White House is promoting his candidacy to split the diplomatic field and secure votes from Moscow and Beijing. For voters who favor a less bureaucratic global institution, the move signals a shift away from career diplomats toward a political figure who has clashed with international norms.

The idea did not originate with Orbán. The Wall Street Journal reports that US officials suggested the role to the former Hungarian leader. State Department sources describe Orbán as the dream MAGA-conservative candidate. Officials point to his history of resisting mass migration, liberal non-governmental organizations, and left-leaning courts as evidence of his ideological fit. They argue he will not be intimidated by the UN establishment.

American diplomats have already counted the votes. One State Department representative identified eight Security Council members who would support Orbán comfortably. The official added that another ten votes out of the 15 total members could potentially be secured. This calculation includes support from Russia and China, who are expected to back the joint candidate. When the US, Russia, and China align on a Security Council goal, they generally achieve it, one official noted.

The timing of the official announcement depends on the US domestic calendar. Sources familiar with the process say the White House is holding back the formal push until after the midterm elections. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance are expected to support the bid once the campaign season concludes. Orbán has expressed interest in the position, though he has attached caveats to his potential candidacy.

US officials contrast Orbán with other contenders for the post. One representative described the remaining candidates as heavy on the secretary aspect, citing their experience in international bureaucracy and behind-the-scenes diplomacy. Orbán, by comparison, would be a general. A State Department official agreed, noting that Orbán knows how to exercise power under hostile conditions and adheres to the correct ideology for this administration.

The proposal comes amid ongoing debates about UN reform. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez recently called for stronger accountability mechanisms to stop governments from undermining international rules. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul have also criticized the Security Council, specifically targeting the veto power that has stalled decisions since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The US push for Orbán aims to leverage his pro-China orientation without sacrificing his image as a defender of Western civilization.
